In short, The Sunbearer Trials could be described as Percy Jackson meets The Hunger Games, but make it Latinx and queer. This story is filled with adventure from top to bottom, and takes place in a new and interesting world. The main character, Teo, is a trans teen who has always been told he’s a troublemaker. When he ultimately gets selected to compete in the Sunbearer Trials, he starts to find out that things aren’t always what they seem.

Something I really appreciate about Aiden Thomas’ work is that there are so many layers to every situation and every character that they all feel real. I loved Xio and was constantly rooting for his friendship with Teo. And the chemistry with Aurelio was off the charts – Teo and him are one of my favorite ships ever! I also appreciated the strong friendship and camaraderie with Nia, despite this world telling them they shouldn’t be friends. The stories of love and friendship are what truly drive this story – and what will make me want to pick up the next one the moment it comes out.

While not a negative in my eyes, it wouldn’t be a full review without a bit of a disclaimer. The Sunbearer Trials is written to be young adult, and as such Teo sometimes does things that can be frustrating to an adult reader. However, young adult literature includes lessons to be learned that force characters to grow, and Aiden Thomas accomplishes that in droves. That being said, if you’re not a fan of a truly young adult novel, then this might not be for you (although I think you should give it a try – it is truly a fantastic read).
